Letters to Gabriel Ferrier, 1882-1906.

The collection comprises 14 short letters sent by Coquelin Cadet to his friend, the painter Gabriel Ferrier. Many of them are undated. Five letters are related to portraits made by Ferrier at his friend's request. The study of a woman's head, mentioned on 1882 Mar. 8, might be for the portrait of Coquelin's girlfriend, the actress G. Scellier, mentioned in two other letters. The actor makes an appointment for his own portrait as Bazile in the Barber of Seville, and later witnesses its "triumph" at the London exhibition. Coquelin asks Ferrier to paint the portrait of a young friend who presents a very apt and interesting portrayal of Rostand (1902 May 13). Some of the letters mention plays given at the Comédie Française, and offer Ferrier tickets. One letter invites the artist to attend a white-tie dinner of theater acquaintances. Coquelin sends a longer letter from Saint-Raphaël on the Riviera, where he probably will perform one of his monologues at the opening of the Casino. In 1906 Oct. 29 he congratulates Ferrier for his nomination to the Institut of France.
